The Orthotic Service
What to expect at your appointment
Your consultation will begin with your orthotist taking a full medical history including your current problem.
You will then have a thorough clinical assessment encompassing:
1. Biomechanical Assessment
Static
This takes place when the body is not in motion and can either be weight-bearing or non-weight-bearing. Any unusual joint positions can be observed and muscle strengths checked.
Dynamic
This takes place while the body is in motion and is weight-bearing and looks at joint positions during gait.

2. Orthotic Prescription
Following the assessment, the orthotist will fully explain their findings and decide on whether orthotic intervention is appropriate and if so whether the orthotic device needs to be custom-made for you, or one that is produced to fit a range of people. You will also be given a quote for the treatment and expectations following the treatment will be discussed.
3. Orthotic Fitting
A fitting appointment will be made at the initial assessment and at the fitting appointment we will ensure that the orthosis fits correctly and functions as intended. Full instructions on the use and care of your orthoses will also be provided.

4. Reviews and Follow-up
Review appointments will be offered as necessary and can be made at any time to address any issues that may arise and to carry out any necessary repairs to the orthosis provided.
